Manufacturer of fountain pen parts who was smart enough to buy a patent from Laszlo Biro for a new type of pen.
In 2005, his company - BIC announced that it had sold its 100 billionth disposable Bic biro, making it the world's best-selling pen.
Benito Mussolini(1883-1945)
Prime Minister and dictator of Italy from 1922-1943, when he was overthrown. He and his mistress were shot dead by Italian communists and their bodies hung upside-down on meat hooks in Milan, to show the population the dictator was dead. Lovely.
Clara Bow(1905-1965)
American actress and sex symbol, best known for her silent film work of the 1920s. Considered to be the original 'It Girl', this expression was taken from the 1927 Hollywood silent film 'It', in which she starred. The term 'It Boy', is the male equivalent.
Sally Gunnell(1966-)
British athlete who competed in the 100m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles and 4x400m. She is the only woman to have held the European, World, Commonwealth and Olympic 400 metre hurdles titles at the same time. Following a career as a sports commentator, she is now a motivational speaker and conference organiser, as well as supporting Sport Relief.
Andi Peters(1970-)
English TV presenter and executive. Started out as assistant to 'Edd the Duck'. A Celebrity Master Chef runner-up he was also the voice of a baggage handler in Toy Story 2.

After an absence of 12 years caused by World War II, the Olympics Games opens in London. Athletes must stay in military barracks and bring their own food due to rationing.

'This is Your Life' is first televised. The show becomes a heart-tug tradition of British TV when unsuspecting celebrities are accosted by Eammon Andrews and made to endure publicly a retelling of their life via sundry 'surprise' guests' memories. Footballer Danny Blanchflower was among those who tossed the 'surprise' format on its head by walking off in a mixture of embarrassment and anger at the invasion of personal privacy.
